First Nations chief vows to fight Canada's pipeline project

Activists rapidly mobilise against the $7.9 billion #NorthernGateway project.

An indigenous leader in British Columbia says (link is external) the Canadian government "has declared war on British Columbians and First Nations" after approving a controversial pipeline project that would run through the province. Demonstrators have already taken to the streets to protest the decision.

The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project would transport (link is external) oil from the province of Alberta to the Pacific Coast for export overseas. The decision was approved on Tuesday night, with a long list (link is external) of more than 100 safety and environmental conditions that must be met for construction to begin.

Despite the requirements, pipeline opponents say the project will harm the environment and infringe (link is external) on the livelihoods of people from Alberta to the coast. British Columbia's Assembly of First Nations rejected the Canadian government's decision and say they are planning legal action to block the pipeline.

Twitter users shared photos using #Enbridge and #NorthernGateway.
